GULFPORT, Mississippi — Developers of a proposed casino at the Gulfport Harbor have failed to close on financing for the project by Tuesday's deadline. Rotate Black MS LLC has site approval for the Hemingway Casino on a 9½-acre site in Gulfport near U.S. Highways 90 and 49.
GULFPORT, Mississippi — Hopes were dashed in Gulfport when developers failed to close on financing, or secure a Gaming Commission extension, to build Hemingway Casino in the harbor.
But property broker Lenny Sawyer is not giving up. Sawyer calls Gulfport a great gaming site.
Mayor Billy Hewes agreed. But he doesn't think Hemingway developer Rotate Black will bring gambling to the harbor.
The casino site included about three acres the city owns, plus two lots that comprised 10 acres with multiple parties holding ownership interests.
Hewes tells The Sun Herald (http://bit.ly/1myyXFX ) the city will start marketing the property again.
Sawyer and city officials believe a casino is the best use for the vacant property, which sits on the harbor's west side.
